Restoration of Flood-Damaged Photos

Now that the flood waters are beginning to recede, people are able to get in and assess damage. One of the most heart-wrenching things is the loss of precious photos. They cannot be replaced. However, they may be able to be restored. There is an organization called Operation Photo Rescue that was started after Katrina and they are open to helping where they can in Iowa. They are a network of volunteers who can repair photographs damaged by natural disasters - at no cost to the owner.

And, there is a local photographer who is involved - Kevin Barber of Barber Photography. He is gathering other volunteers who may be able to help. Contact him today if you can help, or if you have damaged photos and need help.

Here's tips for salvaging flood and water damaged photos. It's important to take immediate action - and the right steps.

ArounddesmoinesThere's another blog in town... and it's called AroundDesMoines.com. I chose that name because we’re talking about life and events around Des Moines, around the greater metro area, and really around the city (which is pretty much in the middle of the state).

All the cities, large and small, and the rural areas (anything Iowa) are included.

You'll find me there, as well as several guest authors. I’m recruiting guest authors and contributors so that we represent different voices, interests and activities. There’s a lot going on in the Midwest.

It's my vision to have a place where we can talk about "anything Iowa" and especially people who are making a difference. Let’s showcase the diversity in our state and make Around Des Moines a gathering place - a home for all things Iowa.

You will find lots of photos there because visuals are important to me and make a site interesting.

Academic Achievement Award from DMACC

It's the end of the school year and time for graduations and celebrations. I've been attending classes at DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) for several years. Urban Campus is my favorite because of the diversity of the student body and faculty.

Aaaward_2This past year I wrote for the Urban Vibe  newspaper. This spring, I was privileged to be nominated and win an academic achievement award for my technology articles. Some of the topics I covered recently were:

This is shameless self-promotion. Here I am with my favorite English teacher, Michael Bryant.

We had a great meal with wonderful company. I received a nice plaque, and had the opportunity to hear about the impact students are making in our community.

It's nice to know that my writing is appreciated, and when putting in late hours at the computer, it reminds me that I can make a difference. Pretty good for a gal who used to hate to write!

All the stats are interesting to me - especially health and climate. Then I looked at the property tax category and compared it to Sioux Falls (where I grew up) and I remembered we have better roads in Iowa.

Live Blogging: The Branding Imperative Workshop

The last session of the day is a panel discussion with the following speakers:

The most interesting part for me is the concept of cooked vs. raw. In the past our brand marketing and advertising was "cooked." It was carefully crafted and produced. Today our messages are more "raw" and authentic. That's also what people expect. Today the cooked message is often rejected.

Raw feels unsafe because so many of us have been brought up on cooked food.

Live Blogging: The Branding Imperative Workshop

Still coming to you live from The Branding Imperative Workshop at Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Des Moines. This session is "Hiring Passionate Brand Owners" by Jan Burch and Bob Mitchell. Combined, they have over 50 years of experience in the HR field, and several awards.

We're talking about questions to ask, what not to ask, and what qualities to look for when hiring employees.  They recommended several books and shared sample interview questions. The highlight was the stories they told.

Like Prof. Janet Keefer, I have "no dog in the hunt."

I am a Mediacom customer, and like many other Iowans, I just want to watch TV. Since I have had conversations with Scott Westerman, he has been "the face of Mediacom" for me, and I have had more patience about the situation.

My thanks to all the Mediacom people I met today who were gracious and answered all my questions - they know who they are. They are also the face of Mediacom.

I met David Smith and he was quite pleasant to share small talk with. Would I feel differently given a chance to know him and hear his side of the story? I'm not sure. He didn't share that much of himself in the hearing. Maybe it's how different parts of the country do business. I didn't get to meet Mr. Faber.

Live blogging is much different than collecting facts and sifting through the information and being able to verify it, etc. before writing a story. This is a collection of my thoughts about what I heard and felt as it was going on. So it's subject to change as each bit of information is heard and pondered.

In the end, we're all people just trying to get along. This reminds me of the New Orleans catastrophe. It seems like the people who get hurt the most are the ones who can least afford it. I really didn't think about that issue until today. I also knew it was difficult in rural Iowa to get services, but unless you have been there or lived there, or have relatives there, you might not understand. Many of us can vote with our feet, but what about the rest? Is this discrimination?

My message to companies is listen to your customers and respond! You might not like it sometimes and you may have to be transparent and accountable. It's the way of doing business today. Who are you listening to?

Oh yeah, thanks for listening to me. This was a great experience and I urge all citizens to get involved in something they feel passionate about and make their voices heard. If you want to talk about the power of blogging and new media, give me a call! It's fun to collaborate.


Summary from the Capitol: Mediacom vs Sinclair

I'm sitting in the West Des Moines Library coffee shop (watch for a website soon) relaxing after listening to all the discussion at the Capitol. I have a lot of thoughts in my head and am going to try and capture some of it for this post. Again, please bear with me. This is my personal experience. I really don't know a lot about the cable industry, or the protocol for hearings at the state level.

Representative Ralph Watts, Republican, took a swing at the whole group, saying the State of Iowa ought to stay out of it. He further indicated the parties ought to solve the issue between themselves and "the public will vote with their feet."

Rep. Deborah Berry, D-Waterloo, expressed appreciation to the Sinclair folks for coming to Iowa to share. She had one question: "is the end in sight - is there an agreement forthcoming, a compromise to meet the needs of the public?" Mr. Faber answered at length saying it was hard to predict, they believe their price is fair, he thinks Mediacom is counting on the government stepping in to settle this.

Representative Vicki Lensing, D-Iowa City, wrapped it up nicely saying "we want to understand... it's been confusing and frustrating." The intent of meeting was to understand. The question was asked of Sinclair what their mission was. Answer was to provide service to communities and to make a profit and return on investment for shareholders. The technology law of 1992 was mentioned again and again during the session. Rep. Lensing said maybe we need to look at the law and see if it's still working. The public is expecting immediate access to news and sports. "Please get this settled for the interest of the public... While it's private, it's in the interest of the community... Iowans don't care (about Mediacom, Sinclair, or legislation). They just want to watch TV. Just work it out."

Professor Janet Keefer, associate professor of journalism at Drake University spoke last. She recently wrote an op-ed piece. She had not prepared a statement and indicated she had "no dog in the hunt."  (That's a term I love and will borrow from her.) There were plenty of chuckles when she mentioned Marvin Middlemark, the man who invented rabbit ears, and how he was probably pleased that we are using them. She wanted to watch the college football championship and was able to with the rabbit ears. She doesn't understand why Sinclair would not want their signal broadcast. She said sometimes laws have unintended consequences and "I think we're seeing that in Iowa." She mentioned Sinclair has a reputation as being aggressive and somewhat of a renegade and we needed to look at the regulatory paradigm. She questioned "when will this all be over?" It reminds her of the movie about the personal life of Hitler. She thinks cable systems are NOT like department stores - they're more like a public utility.

Senator Tom Courtney, D-Burlington, did a very good job of chairing the meeting.

Evidently the closest scenario is the Sinclair McLeod contract. It was asked toward the end whether there could be details shared in the public interest. Sinclair indicated they will check with McLeod to be sure it's OK with them before releasing info. That will be interesting. The public would like to see the numbers and understand the deals.


Live from the Capitol: Mediacom vs Sinclair is a Hot Topic on the Hill

We're still listening. I'm getting to the end of my battery, so will take notes on paper for awhile and wrap this up when I get to a source of electricity.

From Mr. Faber: We don't feel an obligation to offer our signal to cable companies at a price lower than we set. The price we have asked for is far, far below the amount we think our stations are worth. His point is they do take into account the public interest.

Don't you have a monopoly? was a question that was asked of Sinclair.

I don't have the names and titles of all the speakers and I'm sure you'll be able to see a lot of this on the news because all the major channels are here.

Needless to say, it's a hot topic today on the hill!


Live From the Capitol: Mediacom and Sinclair Speak

Rocco B. Commisso, Chairman and CEO of Mediacom, a publicly traded company, gave a little history about the company. He didn't have a prepared speech, but spoke from the heart.
He then turned the mic over to spokesperson Ed Pardini, Sr. VP of Mediacom, who spoke about the impact Mediacom has in Iowa.

Mediacom cares. About people. About Iowa. About their customers. That's just the feeling I have after listening. I heard Rocco Commisso speak several years ago and was impressed with his passion then, too.

Next up, David D. Smith, President of Sinclair Broadcasting who spoke briefly and turned the mic over to Barry Faber, general counsel. I heard a lot about the legalities of the situation. They said they prefer to stick to the facts, not the emotions, and that they didn't come prepared with a commercial about Sinclair.

I don't have the sense Sinclair cares about their customers. They are worried about the letter of the law, not the spirit of the law. Just my impression. The analogy given was something about a sweater for sale in the store and if you can't pay the price, there's no deal. They don't feel it's discriminatory.

Now - to the meat of the matter. It was asked of Sinclair why they won't agree to binding arbitration. Barry Faber replied at length. They indicate they are considering arbitration. The analogy is if you have a house for sale and you determine your lowest price and the offer made wasn't meeting that, would you go to a third party and let them decide? The law is clear that they don't have to arbitrate. They think the free market should be allowed to work.

Senator Mary Lundby, Republican minority leader from Cedar Rapids area spoke at length. She led off telling Sinclair they might do well in Iowa to give the fifteen-minute commercial and she was disappointed in Sinclair's lack of speaking about the customer. Yeah Senator Lundby!

Senator Lundby asked Barry Faber if he has ever been to Carroll, Iowa. No, he hasn't. Senator Lundby has relatives there who can't get a signal with rabbit ears.

Lots of discussion about the FCC laws from Mr. Faber.

I still think it's the bully in the schoolyard.

Representative Wayne Ford says, "it is personal."  He was waiting to see a package from Sinclair about who they are, but didn't get background information. He told them they are seriously underestimating the people of Iowa. "Where is the heart?" is one of his questions.

"Where is the public interest?" is the question from Senator Michael Connolly, Democrat from Dubuque. Their response is they are sorry the public is impacted by this. But their obligation does not extend to entering into agreements with private companies who make a profit from selling cable. They indicate they take an interest in the public. They say the vast majority has choices. Senator Connolly said Barry Faber's answer comes up short for him and their policy stiff-arms the public. Being sorry just doesn't cut it. People don't have the choices Sinclair thinks they do.

I'm a consumer and don't really know about the legalities of this. There's a lot behind the scenes. Again, I speak about the customer experience.



Mediacom vs Sinclair: Live From the Capitol

We're live from the Capitol. It's a few minutes before the hearing starts. There won't be any pictures on this post, but I'll keep adding content and posting as we go along.

The hearing is in session now.

We're listening to the Des Moines Branch President from NAACP. She is speaking on behalf of the low-income customers of Mediacom who are not eligible to switch to other means of service to get FOX channels. She is urging the parties to resolve this dispute.


Mediacom vs Sinclair: Hearing Today at Iowa Capitol

Capitol Here's another update on the cable dispute in Iowa.

There's a hearing this morning at the Iowa State Capitol. Mediacom Communications and Sinclair Broadcasting Group are both on the agenda.

Better get there early to get a seat. I plan to attend because it's a good chance to hear the issues and meet representatives from all the parties.

Mediacom vs Sinclair: Everyone Recognizes a Schoolyard Bully

Fight What's the latest on the  Mediacom Communications dispute with Sinclair Broadcasting Group?

Next step: Sinclair asked for a delay of the hearing scheduled last week at the Iowa Statehouse and Mediacom asked to be on the same agenda. Sounds like they're meeting tomorrow.

Sinclair recently struck a deal with Time Warner Cable. According to news reports, Mediacom says it would settle for a similar deal, but Sinclair has refused.

In the meantime, as a customer, I still appreciate Mediacom and the fact they're listening to their customers (me) and taking time to respond.

I haven't heard from Sinclair - have you? Seems like Sinclair is acting like the schoolyard bully.

Are You Using Social Media to Extend Your Reach?

The magic of the Internet and blogging . . . I just visited (virtually) a new friend in London. We met because of blogging and had a conversation offline (email). He also happens to be a passionate purple person. He pointed out that the color on my site is not purple, but more mauve. Sir William Perkin would be proud. Mauve: How One Man Invented a Color That Changed the World.

How's that for an introduction? Anyway, I totally agree. On my screen it's more lilac, and I know many purple lovers would not technically call it purple, but I choose to keep it because I like the shade. In fact, I like all the shades of purple. Watch for more about the community of purple lovers. Are there any others out there who share a purple passion?

Back to the main point! This is a win-win-win scenario.

As a result of this conversation, Jeremy has extended his reach to my community of readers because I'm going to talk about him and share a link to his blog because I like the topics he writes about. Maybe I'll get to hear him speak in the U.S. someday.

I was able to share my virtual business of designing presentations for speakers with Jeremy.

What Programs Would You Add to the Mediacom Lineup?

348750790_abe9104132 Another update on the Mediacom Communications  and Sinclair Broadcasting Group situation.

Mediacom is only the first to face this problem. There are many more cable companies that will lose Sinclair channels if they don't come to agreement. We haven't heard the end of this saga.

In the meantime, Mediacom wants to replace the content with value added programming. What would you like to see added to the lineup?

Be creative and don't worry about the cost or whether it could happen. Let's just brainstorm.

Democrats and Republicans Don't Agree on Much, But . . .

Democrats and Republicans don't agree on much, but . . . all seven members of the Iowa congressional delegation signed the letter sent to Mediacom Communications  and Sinclair Broadcasting Group urging them to accept binding arbitration in order to end the dispute that has interrupted service for upwards of 250,000 consumers in Iowa.

Yeah! I've posted a couple times about the dispute this week.

According to an earlier comment on this site by Scott Westerman, Mediacom has been urging readers to share their opinions with legislators (see below).

Thanks for the feedback on our adventures with Sinclair. We hate having customers in the middle of this thing and are truly turning over every stone to try to resolve it quickly. You may have heard that the FCC is supporting our proposal to arbitrate a solution. It's an extraordinary step and there is the risk that the arbiter will tell us to pay the big number Sinclair is demanding, but as of now, it seems like a reasonable way to get this fixed quickly. We're mystified as to why Sinclair has not agreed to his approach and are hoping that folks who have the same opinion will share it with our senate and congressional delegation so that the FCC might feel comfortable pressing Sinclair further in that direction. It seems to me that Mediacom has been transparent about this situation and has taken all opportunities - including blogging - to communicate with their customers and listen to what they have to say, even when it's not pleasant. I'm guessing the legislators have heard from the consumer and they responded.

Mediacom is Listening... Are You?

154578698_6011a485ceI posted Saturday about the Mediacom dispute with Sinclair Broadcasting Group, resulting in the loss of the Fox channel for viewers.

As a result, I have a new friend - Scott Westerman at Mediacom. He happens to be "a huge fan of new media as a communication tool." (I'm looking forward to meeting him in the near future.)

This morning he sent me the Mediacom montage from Kurt Van Auken, Producer of Big Ken and Colleen in the Morning at Star 102.5 KSTZ FM Des Moines. Have a listen. These are voices of customers. Hope Sinclair is listening.

Dec. Meeting: IABC/Iowa

Join us Wednesday, Dec. 6, for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Iowa Chapter meeting.

Iabc This month the luncheon speaker is Mary Sigmann, a professional organizer from Ames, Iowa. December is the perfect month to get organized and I'm sure Mary will have plenty of tips to help us organize our offices and homes.

Graceland University SIFE Team Graces Kellogg's Corn Flakes Box

Sifecereal_1Have you heard? The Graceland University SIFE  (Students in Free Enterprise) team is featured on boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes.

It was back in September that the team took second at the World Cup competition in Paris.
It all took on more meaning for me when I recently visited Lamoni. It was my pleasure to meet members of the team, the director, and business leaders from the community. That's when I happened to see a photo of the SIFE team on a box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. How cool is that?

Great job!   Congratulations to all. Just another reason I'm proud to be in Iowa.

Oh yeah - what does that have to do with communication and business blogging? For me, everything is much more meaningful when I have a conversation with someone. When I visited Lamoni, it was like blogging in person. We had a conversation, and that made me feel connected. We do business with people we like and trust. When you have a conversation with your customers (think blogging), they are more likely to think of you when it's time to make a purchase.
