flickr Feature Makes it Easy to "Blog" Photos

One of my favorite things to do each week is pick a photo for "Wordless Wednesday." I like to take photos myself, and don't always have the time - so I take this opportunity to browse through the latest submissions on my first choice for photos - flickr. It's amazing how many photo sites there are since digital cameras have become popular.  And the quality of the photos is incredible (but not all of them).

When selecting a photo to share on Purple Wren, I use the advanced search button and choose "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos."

That way, I don't end up finding the perfect photo, only to be disappointed when the owner doesn't want me to share it with my readers.

One of the best features on flickr is the "blog this" button that you will see above many of the photos.

Blog_this

You choose which blog and it automatically opens a window where you can compose the post. Once it's saved, I open the post in TypePad to select a category and add Technorati tags. (Maybe someday we'll be able to edit that before we save it, too.)

This process automatically sizes the image and puts in the name and links to the photographer. Cooh, huh?

A Winner of the World's Best Presentation Contest

Have you visited SlideShare lately? I got there just in time today to see they announced the winners of the World's Best Presentation Contest. Take a look. I posted one of the winners here.

Big visuals and text really caught the eye of the people and the judges, and the winners each tell a great story with their presentation.

How do your presentations look? Are you making them audience-friendly, or trying to cram all the words you can on each slide. Maybe they're ready for a makeover!

Graphics at Meetings

ACS

Last week I spent time at the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Chicago. I intended to live blog the events, but took a break from the computer instead and focused on meeting people and enjoying the graphics and design.

Have you ever thought about all the areas that are impacted by graphic design? Here's what I was interested in:

  • Poster sessions: layout and graphics
  • Signage: around the city, in meetings
  • Printed Materials: graphics, copy
  • Exhibits: display graphics
  • Promo Items: graphics and layout, new ideas
  • Books: cover design and layout

Don't Sit on the Fence! Quick, Persuade Liz, Save $100

Have you ever sat on the fence, not quite able to decide on something?

Sittingonfence

When they announced SOBCon'07, I was the first one in line to pre-register, but I did not pay. You can see my name on the attendee list.

Then this week I started teetering - trying to talk myself out of going because I missed the special price earlier in the week. Here's some of the the thoughts that ran through my head: it's too far, it takes too much time, it costs too much, I won't get much out of it, and my favorite:  who will miss me, nobody likes me, guess I'll go eat worms...

Enough of that! When I talked to Liz yesterday, I asked for another chance at the special price. I really do want to be there. Liz asked me to convince her.

Want to know what I told her?

Here is why I want to be at SOBCon:

  • I blog, therefore I am
  • I want to improve my blog
  • I'm a SOB
  • I wanna meet you and the rest of our community - live and in person
  • I'm a contributing editor at Successful-Blog
  • I attend Tues. Open Comments (a lot)
  • I spoke at the Virtual Conference
  • I will make the audience better, and so will you

Guess what!  Liz said yes!

Would you like to have the same chance to save $100? Hurry up quick though.

Go here - I bet you can persuade her, too. She's the nice one.

See you in Chicago!

Oh yeah, thanks Liz.

Environmentally Friendly Paper

Paperwrap_1_1Here's an interesting marketing solution!

Harbor 100 is a recycled, multipurpose paper. It's produced in partnership with Frogfile, Hemlock Printers, and Grays Harbor Paper.

That's not so unusual.

What's interesting is that the wrap is printed so you can fold it into an origami tree for your desk or office. Great way to call attention to an environmentally friendly product and make something fun out of the wrapper.

Thanks to Larry Hnetka for the tip.

What are you doing to reduce your impact on the environment?

Lightbulb Moment: Visualization and Passwords

Lightbulb Easton Ellsworth at Blog Chalk Talk wrote about creating memorable passwords.

This is great. I'm going to take my mantra, elevator speech, or an affirmation - something positive that I want to remember and focus on - and turn it into a password.

I can make something that I do many times a day a visual process. In the past I have created passwords using words to describe things I want (e.g., newjob, oregon) but this will be much more powerful.

Thanks for the terrific idea Easton!

Create a Treasure Map of Your Goals

352023817_db07ab045d_o Need some inspiration for goal setting?

Yes, it's getting to be the end of January already, but there is still plenty of time to set goals!

They say it's more effective to write down your goals. Even better, make a treasure map . . .

Treasure mapping is a process of visualizing your goals (and hopes, desires, and dreams) and representing them with a collage of pictures. Don't worry about how - just brainstorm with yourself.

Look through magazines and catalogs and if a picture resonates with you, tear it out. The pictures can be literal (a car) or symbolic (represents something of importance to you). You don't need to know exactly what you are looking for or how it might come to be. It's a process of opening up to opportunities and possibilities.

Some people create a treasure map every year. Others create a treasure map for a specific goal like starting a business, taking a trip, or having a happy relationship. You can do it in a couple hours or over a couple weeks. It's up to you. Create anything you like.

It's easy to get started.

  1. Select goal and a time frame.
  2. Grab a stack of magazines and catalogs.
  3. Cut out compelling photos, illustrations and words.
  4. Arrange and paste them on a poster board.

When you're done, put it away in a closet or hang it in plain view. Either way, you have set the intention in your mind. It's fun to look at your treasure maps over time to see how many of your goals have been realized.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Spiritual goals: faith, philosophy, beliefs
  • Intellectual goals: reading, learning
  • Physical goals: fitness, healthy food and drink, strong bodies, ideal weight
  • Relationship goals: family, friends, mentors, spouses, kids, pets
  • Activities: travel, bicycling, running, hiking, camping, sailing, reading, relaxing
  • Business/material goals: wealth, busy store/office, employees, real estate, art, clothing

What are your goals? Can you picture them?

My WUP

MywupIn my efforts to keep organized, I like to write a lot of things down. So you will usually see me with a notebook of some sort. In fact, here's a picture of my latest small version.

Anyway, I was interested to hear about the WUP or Wake Up Pad. You can read about it in this great book titled The Radical Edge by Steve Farber. Here's links to bloggers who use this and similar methods:

The idea is to stay present every day, wherever you are, by taking notes. Then you can ponder what you have written and take action based on your observations.

My problem though is I have too many notebooks. I tend to be a messy note writer and I don't keep the notebooks intact (Steve Farber says he has boxes of notebooks). I take pages out and file them with projects and sometimes I throw pages away when I complete all the items. This weekend I plan to tidy up all my work areas and make sure I capture the notes from all the books.

If you have hints for me, I'll listen...
