Bathroom Blogfest 2011: Climbing Out and Sculpture

IMAG1156Last week we had dinner with the grandkids. It was fun to discuss recent school trips. This semester I'm taking a class and we had the opportunity to tour the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines. And to my surprise, our almost 10-year-old granddaughter had just taken a similar tour with her school class. We shared some pictures and discussed our favorite sculptures, and our least favorites.

When it came time to sit down and write about the Bathroom Blogfest and I looked at this year's topic, I immediately thought about a piece of sculpture that I really liked - and she didn't. It's called In the Morning by Anthony Caro and it is a woman climbing out of a bath.

What's this have to do with the customer experience? Everything. Bathing is when people get cleaned up and ready to experience whatever the rest of their day offers. It's usually a private and personal experience and we want it to happen in nice surroundings.

Make sure your customers know you care by offering safe, clean facilities - whether you are a hotel or a retail store. It just shows the customer that you care.

Bathroom Blogfest 2011: Cleanliness

IMAG0272The bathroom experience really can make it a better visit for your customer... or not. According to the current poll on the Bathroom Blogfest site, "cleanliness" is winning as what matters most. You can cast your vote now!

Subway is a company that takes cleanliness seriously. I was impressed with how immaculate the bathroom was at this location in West Des Moines and snapped a photo of the sign. They are proud of their facilities and that's a refreshing change. When they take care of the bathrooms, you know they are likely taking care of everything else.

What does the cleanliness of your bathroom tell your customers about you and your business or service?

Have You Checked Out Bathroom Blogfest 2010?

BathBlogfest-2010--button-2 One of my favorite times of year is October. It seems like interesting events occur then... fall colors, fall break, birthdays, the Bathroom Blogfest, and Halloween. Even though the 2010 Bathroom Blogfest is over, it's not too late to visit the website and read all the great posts that have been written during the last week. Weekends are a great time to catch up on reading.

The topic was "Still Stuck in the 60s?" inspired by Mad Men, one of the most popular TV shows this season.

How is your bathroom still stuck in the 60s? How does that relate to customer service? You can also check out posts from previous years to see how important this piece of the experience is for customers. It might make more of a difference than you are aware of.

So jump in and read a bit. And look for this event next October.

...today's going to be a good day.

I first saw this video on Friday even though it happened last September. When Firefox crashed and I restarted it today, the site popped up again. Love the song - love the performance. What a wonderful way to engage the audience. Seems like a great way to start the day, too.

How to incorporate FUN into everyday life

Here's a site guaranteed to make you smile. Looks like fun does change our behavior and they are proving it. The Piano Stairs are my favorite, and the Bottle Bank Arcade is a close second.

What Do Frozen Pears Have to Do With the Customer Experience?

I just arrived home to a driveway full of snow that needed shoveling and a box of pears from my favorite fruit supplier. It's a holiday gift we get every year from a much loved relative. Imagine my joy at seeing that little box beside my door - epecially after a major winter storm and being snowed-in at another location.

19615Unfortunately, the little box was sitting in a couple inches of snow and there were footprints in the unshoveled driveway. The UPS driver left them beside the door and they are now frozen pears that have been sitting out overnight.

I wish I had thought to take a picture...

Would you leave the box of delicate fruit in a snowbank? In my mind it's an example of poor customer service. Next time I hope they leave them with a neighbor. Maybe the drivers have guidelines to follow, but it didn't make much sense to me.

Another example of customer service - this time excellent - is the staff member at Harry and David who assured me they will send out a replacement box at no charge. Can't wait to get them!

Hope we're here next time to receive delivery.

What experiences of customer service - good or bad - have you noticed lately?

Have You Seen Sue?

Sue

This week I was a tourist in Chicago. My 3-1/2 yr. old grandson was quite anxious to visit all the dinosaurs (and the 5 yr. old enjoyed them, too).

We spent a lot of time looking at fossils and displays at the The Field Museum. Of course, the highlight was SUE, the largest tyrannosaurus rex fossil discovered. (We're both from South Dakota!)

Have you visited yet?

Environmentally Friendly Paper

Paperwrap_1_1Here's an interesting marketing solution!

Harbor 100 is a recycled, multipurpose paper. It's produced in partnership with Frogfile, Hemlock Printers, and Grays Harbor Paper.

That's not so unusual.

What's interesting is that the wrap is printed so you can fold it into an origami tree for your desk or office. Great way to call attention to an environmentally friendly product and make something fun out of the wrapper.

Thanks to Larry Hnetka for the tip.

What are you doing to reduce your impact on the environment?

Help Design the New Pepsi Billboard

Pepse Here's your chance to help design a billboard! Pepsi has created an interactive site where you can select a stencil and "spraypaint" a board - there's several of them.

I think it's kinda neat to see and hear the traffic from the Times Square webcam. Makes me happy to get away from the noise!

Interesting project. You don't have any control over who will paint over your spot. It will be fun to see what they look like when the project is over.

Check it out at This is the Beginning.
