Passion: What does it mean to you?

Angelamaiers I've been assisting Angela Maiers post guest posts on her blog this month while she has been traveling. The topic is PASSION-Driven Conversations. She has invited "a diverse group of genius minds to the table." Included are "award winning educators, bloggers, college professors, children’s book writers, scientists, small business owners, leaders from the education and corporate world, social media gurus and consultants, three New York Times best selling authors, parents, and of course, students!"

It's been a pleasant and thought-provoking read as I prepare these blog posts to be published. Take a look and let me know what you think.

What are you passionate about? How do you express that passion in your work or life in general?

I've been thinking about passion a lot during the past year and especially the last month and I will start sharing those thoughts in posts here.

Social media buzz helped promote Nerdy Thirty

Just returned from the Social Media Club Des Moines event featuring Wendy Townley speaking about her recently released book Nerdy Thirty. Great speaker, great company and always great food at The Machine Shed.

Nerdythirtybook Wendy shared how her book came to be published and the journey she is now on as she becomes a recognizable face around the Omaha area. She uses a mix of social media to create buzz as well as traditional advertising methods including print and radio.

My favorite parts are about how other people have become Nerdy Thirty fans and are promoting the book/concept in ways that she would have never thought of herself. Let's keep an eye on her and where this goes! Definitely a go-to event.

Check out upcoming SMCDM events.

Writer, the Internet Typewriter

I was searching for a minimal word processor. I didn't want a lot of formatting bells and whistles - just text. Microsoft Word has a lot of hidden code that can really mess up your blog if you copy and paste.

Writer, the Internet Typewriter Writer, the internet typewriter, by John Watson is one tool that I found. I love it! I can concentrate on writing and not be distracted by any of the usual clutter on my screen. Use the F11 key to expand to full screen mode. (Click on the photo to enlarge.)

And you can save the text, count it, upload it, PDF it, print it, send it to your email account or post it to a blog.

The default is this great green type on a black background or you can change the preferences for color, line spacing or font.

What word processor do you use?

Academic Achievement Award from DMACC

It's the end of the school year and time for graduations and celebrations. I've been attending classes at DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) for several years. Urban Campus is my favorite because of the diversity of the student body and faculty.

Aaaward_2This past year I wrote for the Urban Vibe  newspaper. This spring, I was privileged to be nominated and win an academic achievement award for my technology articles. Some of the topics I covered recently were:

  • Let Them Feed You . . .  (about RSS feeds)
  • Why Would I Want a Blog?

This is shameless self-promotion. Here I am with my favorite English teacher, Michael Bryant.

We had a great meal with wonderful company. I received a nice plaque, and had the opportunity to hear about the impact students are making in our community.

It's nice to know that my writing is appreciated, and when putting in late hours at the computer, it reminds me that I can make a difference. Pretty good for a gal who used to hate to write!
